RESIDENTS in a Northside apartment complex were left shocked and angry after material posing a major fire hazard was dumped in their basement car park.
Homeowners and tenants in Block 21 in Clongriffin were furious to discover more than 30 tyres dumped in their underground car park last Sunday week (July 15).
The fire risk posed by the illegal dumping struck a chord with residents, many of whom had to relocate to a nearby hotel for three months two years ago when a fire in the same car park severely damaged the electrical cables in the block.
While the management company acted quickly to have the tyres removed, residents, including Cian Burgess, are furious that their lives and properties could be put in danger by the wreckless act of the illegal dumpers.
“I can’t understand how or why some gobs**te would be so wreckless,
? Mr Burgess told Northside People.
“When I saw the big pile of tyres my first thought was of how much of a fire hazard it was. If it were set alight it would be an inferno.
“There are two small children living in the apartment on the first floor and a baby in the floor above that.
“We’ve been here before in 2010 when a car was set on fire and caused so much damage to the block that me and the residents of 63 other apartments were forced out of our homes for three months. I don’t want that to happen again.
?
Mr Burgess explained how the illegal dumping was even more disappointing as a group of residents had just days earlier got together for a voluntary clean-up of the block.
“We came together for the sake of community spirit to tidy the place up,
? he stated.
“When times are bad and we know there’s a lack of money for such clean-ups, we decided that we’d pull our sleeves up and get stuck in.
?
Mr Burgess added:
“It’s just sickening and infuriating that someone could come along just a few days later to dump their tyres at our homes and show a blatant disregard for safety and human life.
?
Donaghmede ward councillor MÃcheál Mac Donncha (SF), who was contacted by local residents, described the illegal dumping as a
“new low
?.
“Those responsible for this dumping are to be deplored for creating such a hazard for residents,
? said Cllr Mac Donncha.
“It was especially reprehensible given that the dumping occurred on the weekend when the local community had organised a voluntary clean-up of the area.
