Boxer stars in documentary about Olympic hopefuls

Kenny Egan features in episode two of the new TV series on Tuesday, June 26 at 10.35pm on RTÉ One.

KENNY Egan is due to appear in an RTE documentary that captures the highs and lows of Irish athletes trying to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Game in London.

The new six part series

‘London Calling’ follows the hopefuls as the tension builds before big qualifying events and traces their progress as they strive to reach the Olympic Games in London.

Egan was one of Ireland’s heroes from the 2008 Games after he won a silver medal in the Light-Heavyweight division. But the success went to his head.

After getting his feet back on the ground, Kenny faces the teenage boxing sensation Joe Ward as he makes his bid to qualify for the Olympics.

London Calling follows Egan as he strives to achieve a record eleventh national title and secure his place in London in two massive bouts against the young pretender.

Focusing not just on the sporting achievements of the participants, this observational documentary series also draws a clearer picture of these exceptional people and how they balance world-class training regimes with living their everyday lives.

Drawn from urban and rural backgrounds from across Ireland, the would-be Olymp-ians compete in a wide range of disciplines including boxing, discus, triathlon, sprinting, three-day event walking, long distance running, and cycling.

Taking place against a backdrop of economic hardship, many of the sporting hopefuls featured in the documentary struggle to finance their dream of representing the nation, while having to stay focused on the end game.

As they train to participate in the ultimate sporting contest, London Calling also shines a light on the effect this level of dedication has on the athletes’ personal and private lives.
