THE Northside got a welcome jobs boost last week with the announcement that IBM will create several hundred jobs at its Dublin 15-based technology campus.
The computer software giant will create the jobs with the opening of a new global services integration hub in Mulhuddart.
The multinational, which already has its European sales and services support centre located in its Dublin 15 campus, currently employs more than 3,000 in Ireland and 433,000 people around the world.
Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton TD was among those who welcomed the IBM jobs announcement.
“I am delighted that IBM has chosen Dublin West for this significant expansion,
? she stated.
“It’s a great vote of confidence in the people of Dublin West, in IDA Ireland and in the government’s jobs strategy.”
Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar (FG) said the announcement reinforces the area as a technology hub.
“This is further proof that Dublin 15 is a viable choice for investors,
? he added.
“These positions at the new Global Services Integration Hub in Mulhuddart will give a major boost to the area.
“Dublin West is already a technology hub for the wider city, and these new jobs will reinforce that status. I look forward to welcoming the new staff members to the constituency.

Dublin Labour MEP Emer Costello (Lab) said the announcement was a
“terrific boost
? for an area badly hit by the recession.
“These 200 new jobs will add new vitality to the whole area,
? she stated.
“Despite what some are suggesting, there is no easy road to recovery.
“We all know we have to get our public finances in order so that future generations aren’t burdened with completely unsustainable public deficits and debt.

Meanwhile, local councillor Kieran Dennison (FG) hailed the jobs announcement as an endorsement of the Government’s policy of driving down costs to attract inward investment.
“IBM transferred 190 manufacturing jobs from Mulhuddart to China in October 2010 so it is a real boost of confidence that IBM’S second world integration hub is to be based in Mulhuddart where the company already has a substantial operation,
? he stated.
Local TD, Patrick Nulty (Lab) described the announcement as
“a big vote of confidence in West Dublin and its people.

“A good road infrastructure, educated workforce and a pro-investment environment are key factors in how Transnational companies make their business decisions,
? he said.
“This announcement shows that IBM is here for the long haul and should also help attracted other companies to invest in our area.

“This announcement demonstrates that Dublin West has qualities which transcend the immediate economic situation and that with the right policy mix we can be at the vanguard of future economic development in Ireland.
