LAST Saturday week (April 14) the Mountjoy Square Society conducted a major clean-up of the north inner city as part of An Taisce’s National Spring Clean campaign.

This is the society’s third clean-up as part of an effort to tackle local problem spots and improve the area.

The society is dedicated to the upkeep and promotion of the area and also runs monthly events and walking tours, as well as liaising with local schools, promoting the historically and culturally rich aspects of the Square.

Garrett Fennell, chairperson of the Mountjoy Square Society, said they have a passion for Mountjoy Square and are dedicated to promoting it as a unique and special place to live, work and visit.

“The National Spring Clean Campaign is a great opportunity for the community to work together to improve and enhance the area that we love,

? stated Mr Fennell.

The National Spring Clean campaign, organised by An Taisce and funded by the Department of the Environment, takes place throughout April with clean-up events taking place in towns and communities all over the country.

Starting in 1998, the campaign has grown each year, with more than 530,000 people taking part in 2011, collecting 13,575 tonnes of litter, the equivalent weight of nearly 700 double decker buses!

All volunteers registering for the campaign are issued with a free clean up kit which contains information, posters, colour coded refuse sacks for segregation of waste materials, protective gloves and tabards to keep participants clean.

An Taisce will also liaise with local authorities to ensure that all materials collected will be picked up without charge.

Those who wish to take part should visit the National Spring Clean website at www.nationalspringclean.org
