THE television and radio presenter, Miriam
O’Callaghan, presented awards to two inspiring Southside volunteers recently in
recognition of their dedication and determination to help make a difference to
people’s lives.
Leonard Brown and Abdul Ali Hassan were both singled
out at the annual Barnardos Volunteer Awards, which celebrate the spirit and
contribution of some 300 volunteers who dedicate their time to help the
charity’s work with children and their families from all over Ireland.
Leonard Brown won his Barnardos Volunteer of the Year
Award for his work in Barnardos’ shop in Clondalkin where he helps out three to
four days every week.
His award recognised the inspiration, joy and
selflessness that he brings to work everyday. Leonard first joined the team in
the Barnardos shop on a work experience programme, but decided to stay on as a
regular volunteer. He has since become a valuable member of the team in
Clondalkin.
Speaking at the event, Miriam said:
“I am delighted to
meet the volunteers who so generously give up their time to support Barnardos
vital work in communities throughout Ireland.
“You are an inspiration to us all. Your dedication and
commitment brings light and hope to children, families and communities in these
challenging times.
?
Abdul Ali Hassan won the Helping Hands Young Volunteer
award that recognises the contribution that a young person makes in the
community.
Abdul won this award for his great drive and
motivation as a volunteer with the SWICN Computer Clubhouse.
In 2010 he worked alongside other mentors to create
‘Dublin 8 is Great’, an event that included a cleaning day in the local area
followed by a celebration.
Fergus Finlay, the CEO of Barnardos said:
“As
volunteers, you ensure we rise every time. Each day your dedication and
commitment encourages us to move forward, to fight harder, and to not give up.
Your belief and support has ensured children across the country continue to
receive the best service possible and you instill hope in the possibility of
change.
