Roundabout renaming gets underway

FINGAL County Council has begun the painstaking task
of naming roundabouts to make driving around Dublin 15 less confusing.

The sprawling suburb of Blanchardstown is notoriously
difficult to navigate with its maze of new housing estates.

In Dublin 15 alone there more than 50 roundabouts,
many of which are identical to one another.

It’s hoped that naming the major roundabouts may ease
confusion for both visitors and the emergency services who have long had
difficulty navigating around the area.

The three roundabouts on the main road to Tyrrelstown
have been named Powerstown, Bealing and Tyrrelstown.

The former Tyrrelstown Road, which leads to Avondale
housing estate has been more suitably renamed Avondale Road.

Fingal County Council’s operations department is now
in the process of preparing a scheme to name all other principal roundabouts
throughout the county.

Local councillor Kieran Dennison (FG) called on the
local authority to name and rename roads and roundabouts to help motorists
navigate the area with more ease.

“In Dublin 15 alone there are over 50 roundabouts and
they all look the same,

? he stated.

“If you travel from the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre
to Bramblefields in Clonee you can pass through 14 roundabouts and that’s not
counting the five at the shopping centre.

“If names were attached it would make it easier to
give directions and to find your way around.

“Ideally we should find some way to make each one
distinct such as by a sculpture or a planting scheme.

“Over the coming months we will look at naming schemes
for other areas and would welcome suggestions from the public.
