A VALENTINE’S Ball inspired by a brave young girl from
Malahide will take place next week with all funds going towards cancer
research.
The third annual Valentine’s Ball will take place on
Saturday, February 11 at the Portmarnock Sports and Leisure Centre (PSLC) at
7.30pm.
All the money raised will go towards the National
Haematology and Oncology Unit at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children,
Crumlin.
Tickets cost
?¬60 each and include a champagne
reception, four-course meal, live band, DJ, a late bar and great prizes to be
won.
The event, which promises to be a great night out, was
inspired by brave schoolgirl Mia Keane who was diagnosed with a cancerous
tumour on her kidney in December 2008 when she was just five-years-old.
Mia subsequently had her kidney removed and underwent
six months of chemotherapy. Thanks to the wonderful staff and support in
Crumlin Hospital, she successfully finished her treatment and was recovering
well.
However, in November 2010, doctors discovered that her
tumour had unfortunately returned. This time it was affecting her lung. She
recommenced treatment of more intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy two weeks
later.
Mia is still undergoing treatment. Her mother Maire
Keane explained just how the cancer unit in Crumlin could benefit from all
money raised.
“The return of Mia’s tumour highlights the necessity
for ongoing research and development of oncology treatment,
? she stated.
“The money raised will go towards this research, and
to the ward itself, which is currently undergoing redevelopment.
“To date we have raised over
?¬26,000 and we hope to
match or surpass that this year.
