THE 21-year-old Rathfarnham racing car driver, Aron
Smith, topped the poll recently when he took three trophies at an awards
ceremony in London.
The Oxford Belfry Hotel was the scene for the awards
that honoured his success in one of the most competitive saloon car racing
championships, the Air Asia Renault Clio Cup in the UK.
Aron was awarded three trophies on the night; for
taking first place in the graduate cup and being runner up in the overall
championship, as well as taking the top trophy for the team championship for
Team Pyro.
This brings his total trophy count this year to date
to 15. He also managed to secure nine podiums, as well as recording the three
fastest laps this year, which scored almost 75 per cent of the team
championship points for Team Pyro for the season.
The young Southside student is also attending the
Night of The Champions awards ceremony, where he will be the only Irish driver
to receive a prize on the night, when it is
held at the Crown Plaza, London, on Saturday, November 26.
This is the largest motor sport prize giving event
that is held in the UK each year. Aron received an invitation to attend and
collect further awards for his success in the Clio Cup this year. On the night
he will also be awarded a limited edition Certina watch, from one of the main
sponsors in the Clio Cup, which is designed especially for the drivers, for his
outstanding performance in the Clio Cup this season.
He is also due to attend the annual British Automobile
Racing Club (BARC) awards evening, which will be held on Saturday, February 18
next year at the Chesford Grange, Kenilworth, where he will receive an award
for his success in the Clio Cup in 2011.
The BARC stages this annual event to recognise the
success of drivers in British motor racing each year.
Aron paid tribute to all his sponsors including Smiths
Hire Centre, Smiths Building Supplies, Brandtactics and DIT, where he is a full
time engineering student, who supported him this year.
He also acknowledged all the good wishes from his supporters,
both in Ireland and the UK, as well as his family and friends.
He says he is now looking forward to 2012, when he
plans to compete in the British Touring Car Championship in the UK.
