SIPTU members employed in RTÉ have voted overwhelmingly in favour of balloting for industrial action if there is any further outsourcing of production or roles at the national broadcaster.
In a ballot, the results of which were released today, the vote was 85% to 15% in favour of proposals for a ballot on industrial action if management attempts to implement any further outsourcing of roles and production responsibilities.
SIPTU organises approximately 600 RTÉ staff carrying out a wide variety of roles.
SIPTU Services Divisional Organiser, Adrian Kane, said: “This strong ballot result demonstrates the determination of SIPTU members in RTÉ to defend public service broadcasting while also ensuring that workers’ voices are heard and respected.
“Our members have acted collectively, responsibly and democratically throughout this process.”
“RTÉ workers have carried the burden of uncertainty over recent years.
“This result must now be matched by a clear commitment from management to meaningful engagement with staff and their union.
“All of us should be united by the aim of making RTÉ the best public service broadcaster it can be.
“Unfortunately, if management continues on its current course, it is clear our members will engage in industrial action to protect the future of the station.”
SIPTU Organiser, Robbie Purfield, said: “This ballot provided our members in RTÉ with a clear opportunity to make their views known.
“The outcome is decisive and provides a mandate for SIPTU to continue engaging with RTÉ management, while retaining the clear support of our members to turn to industrial action if this engagement is unsuccessful.”
“Our focus is on ensuring that change at RTÉ is delivered in a manner that protects workers, supports quality employment and strengthens RTÉ’s capacity to fulfil its vital public service role.”
