At least 16 people have been killed and dozens more injured after Russia launched a massive overnight assault on cities across Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, in what officials described as one of the largest attacks in recent months.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia fired 659 drones and 44 missiles during the barrage.

It said 636 drones and 31 missiles were shot down or neutralised, but the scale of the attack still resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction.

In Kyiv, four people were killed, including a 12 year old child, and at least 50 others were injured, according to local authorities.

Further south, the port city of Odesa was also hit, with nine people killed and at least 11 injured following a series of explosions.

The city of Dnipro (pictured below) suffered a direct strike to its central area, leaving five people dead and 26 residents injured.

A spokesperson said that 12 of those injured in Dnipro were hospitalised, with four in critical condition.

Victims were reported to have suffered traumatic brain injuries, shrapnel wounds, fractures and lacerations, while another 14 people were receiving outpatient care.

The attack caused multiple fires across the city and damaged residential buildings, a technical college, businesses, garages and vehicles.

Emergency services have been working since the early hours to deal with the aftermath.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes, which targeted civilian areas, underlined the ongoing threat posed by Russia.

“There can be no normalisation of Russia as it is today,” he said in a post on X.

“Another night has proven that Russia does not deserve any easing of global policy or lifting of sanctions.

“Russia is betting on war, and the response must be exactly that, we must defend lives with all available means, and we must also apply pressure for the sake of peace with the same full force.”

The attack marks a significant escalation in the intensity of aerial bombardments, with Ukrainian authorities continuing to assess the full scale of the damage and casualties.
