Road Safety Authority should be disbanded, says Greens

Green TD Roderic O’Gorman has said that the Road Safety Authority is “not fit for purpose.”

The Dublin West TD said, “at the Oireachtas Transport committee over the past few weeks, we’ve spoken to organisations representing pedestrians, lorry drivers, motorcyclists – one point of absolute agreement is that the Road Safety Authority is no longer fit for purpose.”

He said that Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien has no plans to scrap the RSA, despite the government making a commitment in October 2024 to disband the organisation.

O’Gorman criticised the delay in the rollout of specific road safety measures, such as the camera enforcement strategy, but has been put on ice since last May.

“That strategy would bring in static speed cameras, red light cameras, and phone use cameras nationwide. And then there’s the dash cam and cycle cam footage. That was supposed to be rolled out by Gardai last year and without it there is no way to secure convictions for dangerous driving from the huge amount of footage that motorists and cyclists gather, every day,” O’Gorman stated.

The Green Party is calling for the immediate publication of the camera enforcement strategy and for the Ministers to explain why the reform of the RSA has been “abandoned.”
