Families are falling further into energy debt while companies are coming out of their arrears, according to a new report.
The latest figures from the CRU clearly show a two-tier system for energy arrears under Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael according to Lynn Boylan MEP.
The Sinn Féin MEP for Dublin has said that the figures clearly show things are getting worse for households as a result of no action or support from the government, while the number of businesses in arrears is dropping significantly.
“The difference between figures for households and businesses is staggering” MEP Boylan said.
Per the report, 303,465 households are behind on their energy bills, an increase of 69,000 from last year, and 25,000 higher than in 2023.
The number of businesses in arrear,s however, has fallen by 9,500 to 40,461
Boylan noted that the number of businesses in energy arrears has seen a drop, and that is welcome, she said “the difference in pressures faced by households and businesses is staggering.”
“Why are the government continuing to do absolutely nothing to help families who are struggling here and now with these energy costs?
