HSE stop smoking advisors are your best help to QUIT for good in 2026

Take back control from smoking Quit for Good This January with Free Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRT) from the HSE Dublin and South East.

The HSE is reminding people in the Carlow-Kilkenny/Tipperary South, Waterford/Wexford and Dublin South/Wicklow areas that those who use NRTs  double their chances of quitting smoking successfully.

This “Quit Month” (January 2026), people who smoke are being encouraged to access support to stop from the HSE Dublin and South East.

The HSE’s QUIT services are now helping more people quit successfully than ever before.

In the last five years, the number of people using HSE QUIT has doubled and the proportion who are successful quit at the end of their programme has increased by 50%.

HSE QUIT services provide people with free access to support and free NRT, which offer people the best chances of quitting for good.

HSE QUIT services are free and available all year round. The QUIT service provides personalised, evidence-based plans, tailored to your needs, using any combination of the support options.

•             Free one to one behavioural support with a trained  stop smoking adviser,

•             Free Carbon Monoxide Testing,

•             Free Nicotine replacement therapy,

•             Follow up appointments for one full year.

Senior Health Promotion and Improvement Officer and Lead for Tobacco and Smoking Cessation in the Dublin South and Wicklow area Colleen Fahey says:

“You are up to four times more likely to stop smoking for good if you use a combination of stop smoking medication (NRT) and receive support from a HSE Stop Smoking Adviser.

“Our service provides free NRT in the form of sprays, mists, lozenges and patches.

“Your Stop Smoking Advisor will help you decide which is best for you. “Nicotine Replacement Therapies (NRTs) are licensed medicines that safely give you just enough nicotine to relieve cravings and withdrawal symptoms, while reducing your dependence on nicotine gradually.

“They help you cope with cravings and withdrawal symptoms. NRT does not contain the poisonous and cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco smoke, such as tar and carbon monoxide.

“NRT products from the HSE are checked for safety by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA).”

One client the HSE have been supporting on their journey said the following to them this week:

“I wanted to reach out to thank you again for your active support throughout the initial months of my quit smoking journey.

“As I was reflecting on the year and the highs and lows, this has been one of the highs of my entire adult life and I thought I’d share that joy with you as I am grateful to you and your team at HSE.

“I am happy to share again that I am off smoking and a non-smoker.”
