Independent TD for Dublin Bay North, Barry Heneghan, is currently aboard one of nine vessels taking part in the Thousand Madleens to Gaza humanitarian flotilla.
Heneghan’s ship, The Milad, is looking to deliver essential aid to Gaza baby formula, medical supplies, and prosthetic limbs.
The flotilla is currently continuing its journey eastward off the southeast coast of Crete.
Last week saw 16 Irish citizens detained by Israeli forces after their ships were intercepted as part of the Flotilla.
In a statement on Monday morning, Heneghan said, “we passed through the area where the Sumud flotilla was attacked. Our crew remains calm, focused, and determined to reach Gaza with the aid we carry. These supplies, baby formula, medicine, and prosthetics, could save lives. Every member of this flotilla is acting on conscience, standing for humanitarian principles that should never be criminalised.”
“Each of our nine boats has elected representatives aboard, including parliamentarians from Belgium, Spain, France, Denmark, and Italy. Their presence is intended to help ensure the safety and visibility of this peaceful mission and to remind the world that international law must apply equally to all.”
Heneghan, who is one of the independent TDs who are backing the government parties in the Dáil, said “this is a humanitarian mission, not a political one.”
“The blockade of Gaza is inhumane and must end. Ireland stands in full solidarity with its citizens and with the people of Gaza, whose suffering is worsening by the day. We are calling for an immediate and sustained flow of humanitarian aid, an end to collective punishment, and protection for all civilians.”
“The courage of the people in Gaza, who continue to stand on the shoreline waiting for us, reminds us why we must keep going; we have a duty to act when governments fail to protect human life and dignity. That is why we are here,” he said.
The Thousand Madleens Flotilla is expected to continue its course toward Gaza over the coming days, depending on weather and security conditions.
