Dublin Simon Community has come to the difficult decision to postpone the 42nd Annual Home Run tomorrow Saturday, October 4.
This is due to a Yellow Status – Wind weather warning, issued by Met Éireann, which will be in effect from 6am to 12pm on Saturday, with strong to near gale force and gusty winds forecast.
As the weather warning directly overlaps with the running time for the event, in the interests of health and safety, the charity has concluded that the event cannot proceed as planned.
Catherine Kenny, CEO of Dublin Simon Community, said, “We are of course very disappointed that we can’t go ahead with one of our beloved flagship events this Saturday, but considering the unpredictable conditions Storm Amy may bring and the weather warning that will be in place, we have to prioritise people’s health and safety above all else.”
“We are currently working with our partners and suppliers to reschedule the Home Run event and will update all of those who signed up to participate as soon as we can.
“While it is unfortunate that the Home Run cannot go ahead as planned, the reality is that this weekend there will be people out on the streets facing these harsh conditions.
“Please spare a thought for those rough sleeping during this challenging time.”
The charity will be in contact with all participants once any details of a rescheduled event are confirmed. For those who cannot attend the rescheduled event, there will be an option to receive a refund of the registration fee.
Extreme weather conditions present additional challenges for those already facing the hardship of life on the streets.
The Dublin Simon Street Outreach Team, which operates 365 days a year, will prioritise those most vulnerable during these harsh conditions.
The charity is asking the public to help identify people who may be sleeping rough, particularly in more isolated areas of Dublin city centre and the suburbs.
Here’s how you can help:
Alert the team to rough sleeping: Use the Rough Sleeper Alerts app, available on iPhones and Androids, to let Dublin Simon Outreach know about someone in need.
