From Monday, 1st September, revised Child Leap Card products will be introduced across the Dublin Commuter Leap Fare Zone, providing better discounts on fares for those under 18.
These new discounted child fares follow a fare determination made in July, building on the earlier fare structure changes implemented in April and June which defined four new Leap fare zones in Dublin and surrounding commuter areas.
The new product can be availed of via the Leap top-up app or at leapcard.ie.
The new discounted fares will be available on all daily, weekly and monthly Child Leap products, providing a 67% discount on adult fares improving on the 50% discount introduced in a previous fare determination.
Children travelling by train to and from Dublin city centre from towns such as Balbriggan, Skerries, Greystones, Kilcoole, Kilcock, and Sallins/Naas are among those set to benefit.
These customers (in Commuter Zone 2) currently pay €1.95 single fare, or €16.00 a week if they have a weekly Child Leap Card product. With this new product, the weekly fare will be just €10.60, a saving of 33%.
This new child fare discount matches the percentage discounts available to children in the Dublin City Zone (Zone 1).
The new Child Leap products will cover journeys from throughout the new Leap Commuter fare zones (Zones 2, 3 or 4) into the central Zone 1 but also allows onward travel within the central Zone by any TFI rail, Luas and Dublin city bus services at no extra cost, offering great value to customers.
Interim discounts will be applied to weekly products as part of the NTA’s broader fares strategy.
Speaking on the introduction of the new Child Leap Products, Jeremy Ryan Director of Public Transport Services at the NTA commented: “We’ve heard from families and communities across the new commuter zones, and we’ve listened. These new discounted Child Leap fares are a direct response to that feedback. By aligning child fare discounts across Zones 2, 3 and 4 with those in Dublin City, we’re making public transport more affordable and accessible for young people, wherever they live. It’s a meaningful step toward a more inclusive and connected transport network.”
