A 24-hour community event supporting cancer patients and survivors returns to South County Dublin
Ballyfermot woman and cancer survivor Hollie Maxwell is urging the Dublin community to take part in this year’s Relay For Life South County Dublin, a powerful 24-hour event that brings people together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society.
The event takes place on May 31 in Corkagh Park, Clondalkin, and registration is now open at relayforlife.ie.
Relay For Life is a unique overnight fundraiser where teams of friends, families, and colleagues take turns walking a track throughout the day and night.
It’s a moving tribute to cancer journeys and a chance to stand in solidarity with those affected by the disease.
One of the most poignant moments of Relay For Life is the Candle of Hope ceremony, where thousands of personalised candle bags are lit to honour those we’ve lost and celebrate those who have survived.
Another highlight is the survivors’ lap, where cancer survivors kick off the event with a celebratory walk around the track, cheered on by their community.

For Hollie Maxwell, aged 28, Relay For Life holds deep personal meaning.
Diagnosed with leukaemia at just six years old, she completed chemotherapy just before her First Communion.
She’s now sharing her story to show others that there is life after cancer – and to encourage people across Dublin to get involved.
“Most people have been affected by cancer, and I think Relay For Life is a great way for us to support each other – there’s a great sense of community,” Hollie said.
“I went to my first Relay For Life in 2016. It felt really amazing, and it was very emotional.
“It was really nice to meet other survivors and hear their stories.
“Especially other young people – I don’t really meet other young cancer survivors in my day-to-day life.
“One in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime.
“It’s so important to get behind fundraisers like Relay For Life so vital services can continue to be there when we need them.
“The money raised supports cancer patients and families all over Ireland and funds vital research that saves lives.”
This year’s Relay promises a day full of music, entertainment, and activities for the whole family – all while raising money for life-saving services provided by the Irish Cancer Society.
Sinead Gillespie, Head of Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society, said: “We’re delighted that Relay For Life has returned to South County Dublin this year.
“It’s a chance for communities to come together, remember loved ones, and support survivors — while funding vital services so that no one has to face cancer alone.”
Whether you’re walking in memory of someone special, celebrating your own journey, or simply want to show your support, Relay For Life South County Dublin offers a meaningful way to make a difference.
