Andrews slams Israeli aid blockade as ‘war crime’

Dublin MEP Barry Andrews has strongly condemned the Israeli Government’s decision to cut off humanitarian aid to Gaza, calling it a violation of international law and a cruel act against an already suffering population.

Andrews, who serves as Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Development, didn’t mince words in his criticism.

Citing the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, he pointed out that intentionally starving civilians by “depriving them of objects indispensable to their survival, including willfully impeding relief supplies” constitutes a war crime.

He also noted that collective punishment is classified as a war crime under the Geneva Conventions.

“Maintaining the fragile ceasefire in Gaza is of the utmost importance,” said Andrews.

“I call on both sides to continue negotiations and conclude an extension that can bring about a lasting and stable peace in the region, as well as the safe return of all remaining hostages.

“Illegal and cruel acts such as blocking aid to a region that already has a severe lack of drinking water and no functioning hospitals does not move us forward.”

Andrews emphasised his commitment to keeping the Middle East at the forefront of the European Parliament’s agenda.

In addition to his role as Chair of the Committee on Development, he also serves as Vice-Chair of the European Parliament’s Delegation to Palestine.

“While the world watches in horror, the Palestinian people continue to bear the brunt of the actions of the Netanyahu government,” Andrews said.

“The principles of international justice are clear; we cannot pick and choose when to uphold international law, and our response as Europeans must reflect this commitment.”
