Dublin Fine Gael MEP Regina Doherty has been elected as Vice Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Tax Matters.
This is an important role for Ireland as Europe looks to cooperate more on tackling tax evasion and combatting money laundering across the 27-member Union.
Doherty has also been added to three Parliamentary Committees; ECON, the committee on Economic and Budgetary Affairs, IMCO, the committee on Internal Markets and Consumer Affairs and EMPL, the committee on Employment and Social Affairs.
Speaking after her election, Doherty said “I am really pleased to be able to play such a crucial role for Ireland on the tax committee in the coming years.
“With changes to tax systems happening on a global scale, and employment trends changing drastically in our digital age, it is more important than ever that Ireland has a seat at every table where these discussions take place.
“We also need to defend Ireland’s tax sovereignty and our open and competitive tax offering that encourages investment and job creation, maintain Ireland’s veto over tax affairs and resist attempts by other member states to introduce qualified majority voting in taxation.
“My membership of these committees will give me the best opportunities to advocate for Irish businesses, big and small.
“To help open up greater access to the internal market, ensure Europe is working with and for Irish businesses and workers, and ensure Ireland continues to be competitive on a global level.
“Ireland has long been a leader in the financial services sector and I am eager to continue this work”
