Saggart Tidy Towns Committee is continuing its efforts to upgrade the village after the group was re-established earlier this year.
The committee raised €6,000 from local sponsors to help pay for refurb works around the community – such as “beautifying” the derelict Saggart Arms pub.
“We are very happy to inform you that a new Tidy Towns Committee has been established and is active in Saggart again,” the group says.
“We started beautifying the village last July with painting the derelict pub and erecting hoarding around the vacant site.
“We also engaged local artist Emer Gaj-McKeever to paint a mural on the gable end of the pub.
“We raised €6,000 from local sponsors to complete this phase of the work.”
The old Saggart Arms pub is located on the Church Road and was recently boarded and painted all white.
The committee and local residents place hanging flower baskets and graphics that mimic windows and doors on the building to “brighten up the village”.
“We have now started on Phase 2 which includes buying plants for the planters supplied by South Dublin County Council, working with local schools on inspirational biodiversity and community projects, planting wildflower patches and carrying out clean-ups.
“We also plan on delivering a stunning display on each of the two roundabouts which will be our major objective for next Spring.”
However, the group’s renewed efforts are costly, and has set up a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for the projects.
“We would love to secure your support with a donation to help us deliver the plans we have outlined,” it said.
“What we have achieved to date is due to the commitment and dedication of the small group of committee members.
“We actively welcome new members and encourage as many local people to join us and enjoy participating with the makeover Tidy Towns Committee is giving to the beautiful old town of Saggart.”
Chairperson of Saggart Tidy Towns Rita Kelly said the groups efforts “helped galvanise residents to join in on the recent major clean-up, which has made a great improvement in the appearance of Saggart.
“To get us kick started some of our committee members funded the various expenses re: insurance, plants, administration etc.
“But we now ask for your support to help make our village attractive again and to be one of the winners of the National Tidy Towns Competition 2022.”
