Token announces closure

Popular Smithfield arcade Token will close its doors on June 16th.

In a statement on Instagram, the arcade said “though often fully booked, we can’t justify raising prices further to meet rising costs.”

“We may do it all again sometime in the future, but chances are slim and there is no plan to reopen.”

Token became a popular Smithfield meeting point since it opened in 2017.

“Our team has been fantastic during crazy times – weathering floods, fires, and even an actual pandemic.”

Token stated that staff were informed of the decision to close in early March, and said “we are grateful for them giving it their all and still providing great experiences to our guests as we wind things down.”

Before closing its doors for the final time, Token reminded people to use any tokens or gift cards.

“All in all, it’s quite sad, but we gave in our best effort and are walking away with hundreds of memories.”

“We’ve made amazing memories with our guests and received strong community support both supportive during tough times and sometimes quite critical – but regardless, it felt good to know that people cared about what we were trying to do.”

When asked what Token plans to do with the arcade machines, including the likes of The Simpsons arcade game, the X-Men arcade game, Dance Dance Revolution, Time Crisis and Guitar Hero, Token said they own all the machines and do not plan to sell them.

“We were thinking about renting them out if there’s any interest, otherwise we’ll hold onto them,” they said.
